Birding Trip Report to Myanmar
December 27th 2012 – January 12th 2013

Introduction
With its four endemic bird species, a few potential splits and a few
restricted-range species that are hard to see elsewhere, Myanmar is a country
that you have to visit at least once. Our trip was rather short. It was Stijn’s
first visit to SE Asia, so he had a quite long list of target species.
For my brother and me, the list of “must-see-birds” was much shorter.
Thanks …
……. to Ward Vercruysse and Mark Van Beirs for providing us additional information.
Visa
Belgian citizens need a visa to enter Myanmar. We got a visa at the Embassy of Myanmar in Brussels. For Thailand, a visa is not necessary for Belgian citizens.

Local travel agency
We used the services of
Myanmar Travel Expert for arranging permits, local
transport and accommodation for the week on Mt. Victoria. They arranged a driver
and a local guide, Ko Thet. Mobile (95-9) 49214838 or (95-61)60717-60380.
baganbirdwatching001@gmail.com.
Two remarks about their services:
- There was some confusion about the total amount of days on Mt. Victoria. During our correspondation by e-mail, in the original detailed itinerary, five whole days were mentioned. In the contract we signed when we arrived at Yangon International Airport, only 4 days were included, but we did not notice this difference. After a few days on Mount Victoria, it became clear that we could stay one day less than agreed in our original itinerary.
- For a few of the specialties like Spotted Wren-Babbler and Spot-breasted
Scimitar-Babbler, our guide only seemed to know one place. On these places, the
birds were not responsive anymore, probably because of frequent use of
soundrecordings in the past. The guide was not really looking for them anymore
after we left the only place he knew. It was only due to our own initiative,
that we found them on other places.

GPS-coordinates
There are not many GPS-coordinates available in trip reports yet. We only found some in the reports of Uku and Thet Zaw Naing, on www.observado.org and www.xeno-canto.org. I took new waypoints and registered tracks. To get the waypoints or tracks in .kmz- or .kml-format for Google Earth, please contact me. The waypoints are also available here. Notice that these are only the waypoints and tracks that we took during our trip. The ones we found in other reports and websites are not included.
Mobile telephone
Mobile telephone cards from abroad are not working in Myanmar. I searched in Nyaungshwe, Kalaw and Bagan for a card but they only seem to be available at the airports. Except for Mt. Victoria, there was mobile telephone coverage all over the places we visited. We saw people of Myanmar using their mobile telephone everywhere.
Visited sites
Hlawga Park
The main entrance is at the northeast side. From there, you can make a small loop in the northern parts of the park. We only spent a few hours in the park but that was enough to find Stripe-throated Bulbul ssp. davisoni.
Lake Inle – Nyaungshwe
Entrance fee: US$3/pp
Organising a visit to Lake Inle is very easy. From the small village of Nyaungshwe, north of the lake, you can arrange a boat. Compare the prices from the different boat hiring companies. Accommodation is no problem at all. There are hotels and guesthouses in all price categories and many new facilities are being built. For birding on the lake it is sufficient to spend your time at the northern half of the lake.
The best place for Jerdon’s Bushchat you can reach by leaving the village into southern direction and then take the first main side canal to the right. There are also less boats passing by on this place, making birdwatching more comfortable. The main canal is more crowdy, with lots of boats with tourists or local people passing by. We found Collared Myna on the east side of the lake, near a small village. Half a day is enough to explore the northern part of the lake.
Kalaw
Yay Ayekan Forest Reserve
It is about 7 km from Kalaw village to the waterreservoir at Yay Ayekon Forest Reserve. The track inside the forest is probably only accessible by motorcycle. The first part is paved and broad enough to go by car, but the last few kilometres are smaller. The owner of the guesthouse arranged the motordrivers. It took about half an hour to reach the waterreservoir.
At the Forest Reserve, the track north of the waterreservoir looked the most
promising. The trail east of the reservoir is more open and the more south you
go the more degraded it gets. Bird activity was low in this area. Probably we
spent too much time here before we went back to the trail north of the reservoir
where bird activity was much higher. When you are visiting the place without a
local guide, it is probably better to stay 2 days at the reserve, instead of
spending just 1 day here. We did not see the main target, Burmese Yuhina. We
also could not find Pin-tailed Pigeon and Asian Emerald Cuckoo, both seen by
many birdwatchers.
To monastery (pagoda) north of the village
When you are going from the Golden Lily Guesthouse to National Highway 4, just cross the highway to enter the entrance road to a small pagoda. At the first part, you will pass some houses. Keep going left till you reach a ridge. Once you are here, keep on going left till you arrive at the small pagoda. This is the place where we saw Black-headed Greenfinches. The vegetation is dry scrub. Also behind the pagoda, it is good for birdwatching in dry, short scrub.
Bagan
Entrance fee: US$10/pp/week
Irrawaddy River
A boat for 4 hours on the Irrawaddy River was expensive (+/- €40). We navigated to the riverbank on the other side of Bagan. There were only agriculture fields overhere. We left the boat on a sandbank on the same riverside as Bagan. It was clear that this sandbank, with lots of waders and smaller birds, was accessible from the hotel without a boat. The only bird we did not see on both places was Striated Babbler.
Dry scrub area
I have waypoints for all the important places. By foot or by bicycle is the best way to explore Bagan. In the neighbourhood of the Saytana Paya, Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples, you can find all the species.
Bagan to Mount Victoria
The vegetation from Bagan to Mount Victoria is changing from dry scrub to broadleaved forest. Near Kazunma and Nagabwat, there are a few interesting places for birdwatching. I have waypoints of these places, together with the places where we saw Gray-headed Parakeets. Keep in mind that we did not see many birds on the places we stopped during our ride to Mt. Victoria. Probably, it was already too late during the day. See also other trip reports.
Mount Victoria
Mt. Victoria is only accessible with a permit. Permits can (only?) be arranged by a local travel agent. Going there on your own is thus not possible yet. Having your own transport on the mountain is also necessary. Distances are too far to go there on foot.
Probably it is possible to go to Kanpetlet by public transport, but I do not know if it is possible to arrange a permit for the mountain in this village, especially in a short time period.
For pheasants like Hume’s and Kalij Pheasant and Blyth’s Tragopan, the best days
seem to be over on Mount Victoria. In trip reports from only a few years ago it
was mentioned that it was possible to see the three species on a few days visit.
Nowadays, you read in all trip reports that it is nearly impossible to find one
of them. Ko Thet told us that in the last few years, all three species are very
hard or impossible to see. There is still good forest further away from the main
track, on another ridge. I hope that the pheasants are still around there. Just
a few weeks before we visited the place, Ding Li Yong and Albert Low saw a group
of three Blyth’s Tragopans. They also saw a Hodgson’s Frogmouth, a bird that is
hard to see these days. It seems that they are no longer reacting on tape.

Bagan. We paid about €40.
Accomodation
Places like Lake Inle (Nyaungshwe) and especially Bagan are in the itinerary of every (backpack) tourist visiting the country. Moreover, the Christmas holiday made that we never saw so many western tourists in any Asian country before.
We did not make reservations for Lake Inle, Kalaw and Bagan. Because it was a busy time, we had to check a few hotels in Nyaungshwe and Kalaw before we found a free hotel room. In Bagan, we found accommodation in the first budget hotel that we checked.
- Lake Inle (Nyaungshwe): a small hotel just near the canal (west side), 100m south of the expensiveViewpoint Hotel. 29800 Kyat/3pp.
- Kalaw: Golden Lily Guesthouse, 17000 Kyat/3pp/night.
- Bagan: New Wave Guesthouse: This guesthouse is very well located. It is only a short walk to the sandbanks of the river. On the other side of the road, a track leads you to the better places in Bagan within walking distance of the guesthouse. US$30/3pp/night.
- Mt. Victoria:
Pine Wood Villa. Included in package of Myanmar Travel Expert. No idea about the
price.
Short description of our itinerary
- December 27th 2012
Early morning we started our long journey to Myanmar. It was the longest we ever had to make to reach our destination. At 11h15, we had our flight from Brussels Airport to Abu Dhabi. Arrival time was 20h20 local time. Our connection flight to Bangkok was at 9h15 the next day so we had to wait about 13 hours at the airport.
- December 28th 2012
At 18h00, we landed in Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi Airport. We took the free shuttle bus to Don Mueang International airport. From here, we had our flight to Yangon, the next morning. We arranged a hotel, Sena Hotel, close to the airport.
Taxi to the hotel.
- December 29th 2012
After another 13 hours of waiting, we had our flight at 7h10. Arrival time in Yangon was 8 o’clock. We met Moe of Myanmar Travel Expert at the airport. After arranging the payment, we took a taxi, arranged by Moe, to Hlawga Park, just north of the airport. We had 2 hours to spend here and during all the time, the taxi stayed with us. Stijn noticed his first new birds. For Erwin and me, it was a relax way to get used to the Asian birds again. Main target was the distinctive davisoni subspecies of Stripe-throated Bulbul.
When we were back at the airport, at the domestic flight building, we got the news that our flight to Heho had a delay of 1.5 hours. It was already 6 o’clock in the evening when we left the small airport of Heho. By taxi, we drove to Nyaungshwe. This is the small village just north of Lake Inle. At the second hotel we checked, we found a free room. It was a small basic hotel, just near the canal and the Viewpoint Hotel.
- December 30th 2012
At 6 o’clock, we were at the canal, at the east bank, just opposite of our hotel. We arranged our boat already the day before. Checkout time of our hotel was at 12h00, so we left our luggage at the home of the owner of the boat. We sailed through the canal and took the first main canal to the right. This is a smaller canal with nice vegetation on the banks. Soon we noticed our first Jerdon’s Bushchat. In total, we counted 8 of them. We stayed at the northern side of the lake all the time. First, we searched on the northwest side for Collared Myna. Many species were observed but not the right Myna. Thereafter, we sailed to the northeast side of the lake. Here we searched intensively too but without luck. We showed the picture of the myna to the boatmen and he knew the bird and a good place to see it. We went to a small village where it was possible to go on land. Soon after we arrived here, we saw a mixed flock of starlings fouraging in the fields. We went closer and amongst the Vinous-breasted and Black-collared Starlings and Great Myna, we found a pair of Collared Mynas. We had good looks of them when they were flying over, sitting in a tree and walking on the ground. Now that we had seen our main target, we walked back to the boat and returned to Nyaungshwe.
At 11h15, we were back in the village. We took a small taxi to the main road in Sakangyi. Here at the crossroad, there is a bus stop for the bus to Kalaw. We had to wait 1.5 hours, till 15h00, before our bus arrived.
It was just a short drive of 1.5 hours to Kalaw. At the second hotel that we checked, the Golden Lily Guesthouse, we found a free room for the next 2 nights.
The entrance road to a monastery in the hills, north of the village, was close to the guesthouse. We read in other trip reports that it was a good place for birdwatching. We still had an hour before sunset, so we went there for a short walk. Two Black-headed Greenfinches were only seen by Erwin, they only stayed for a few seconds.
- December 31st 2012
At 5h15, we left the guesthouse. The motordrivers were already waiting for us. After about half an hour driving, we arrived at the waterreservoir of Yay Ayekan Forest Reserve. It was still dark and we had to wait for half an hour before it was getting light. We stayed the whole day on the trail north and east of the lake.
A few of the birds that we saw were Himalayan Swiftlet, Speckled Piculet, Gray-chinned Minivet, Striated Swallow, Black-throated Tit, Davison’s and Martens’s Warbler, Gray-cheeked Fulvetta, Hill Blue-Flycatcher, Daurian Redstart and Scaly Thrush. Despite searching for them all the day, we could not find Burmese Yuhina. Late afternoon, we started walking back to the hotel. In the fields just outside the forest, we had White-browed Laughingthrush and Chestnut-capped Babbler. It was already sunset when we arrived at the guesthouse.
- January 1st 2013
New Years Day was a travel day. Our bus to Bagan was scheduled at 8h00, so we had just more than an hour after sunrise. We walked in the direction of the monastery again and there Stijn and me started the day with our first new species of the year, Black-headed Greenfinch. At the small pagoda where Erwin saw them two days before, we had again two birds. One of them was just flying over, but the other one was sitting in the top of a tree for a longer time. It was calling all the time.
At 7 o’clock, we were at the guesthouse again. After breakfast, we walked to the highway just at the end of the road from the guesthouse. We had to wait til 9h30 untill the bus to Bagan arrived.
We arrived in Nyaung U at 16h00. By horse taxi, we started searching a hotel for the next few days. Half way between Nyaung U and Old Bagan, we found a free room in the New Wave Guesthouse. This was an excellent base to explore the Bagan region.
- January 2nd 2013
Early morning, we drove by bicycle to New Bagan. First, we stopped at a place near Myinkaba. Here, we found our first White-throated Babblers. However, the place looked not so promising and we drove further to the Saytana Paya Temple.
Saytana Paya Temple
Very soon, after we arrived, we observed already a Hooded Treepie. Burmese Bushlark was also around. On the temple, there was a Laggar Falcon. We walked into the fields behind the temple. Soon, the group split up. After an hour or so, I found a pair of White-bellied Minivets. Unluckily, the birds did not stay for a long time. During this period Stijn and Erwin flushed a Rain Quail. At the time I saw Erwin and Stijn again, the minivets were already gone. Eurasian Collared-Dove, of the distinctive subspecies xantocycla, were around in small numbers. In the meantime, it was already noon and we
Trip report – Myanmar 2012-2013
decided to go for a cold drink in a restaurant near the river. From there, we saw four River Lapwings and a Pied Kingfisher.
In the afternoon, we drove to the area near the Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples. We found another Hooded Treepie and we flushed a Chinese Francolin. A few Burmese Shrikes were also seen here and Burmese Bushlarks and White-throated Babbler were common. We walked around here for the rest of the day.
Around Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples
In the evening, we met Ko Thet, our guide for Mt. Victoria.
- January 3rd 2013
First thing in the morning, we tried for Indian Nightjar on the track opposite of the New Wave Guesthouse. Soon, one was reacting to the tape but it was visible for only a short time. Following this track, we walked to the area near the Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples. We were birdwatching in nearly the same area as the day before in the afternoon. We found two groups of four and five White-bellied Minivets. A Hooded Treepie was around as well. At noon, we had lunch in the restaurant near the guesthouse.
After a short afternoon break, we drove by bicycle to Old Bagan for a boat trip on the Irrawaddy River. There are many boats for tourists in the small harbour. First, we sailed to what I think is the other side of the river. Along that bank, everything is turned over in agricultural fields. In the only small part with short vegetation that we found here, we flushed about eight Rain Quails. For the remaining, this place was not so good. We returned to the boat and the boatman dropped us at a large sand beach with sparse vegetation. The most impressive was a huge flock of nearly 1000 Small Pratincoles. Pacific Golden-Plover and Greater Sand-Plover were fouraging here, together with three Sand Larks and a few sandpiper species. In the grassy vegetation, we found a pair of White-tailed Stonechats and a few Oriental Skylarks. A few Gray-throated Martins were flying over the river, together with three Red-rumped Swallows. It was already getting dark when we returned to the harbour.
- January 4th 2013
At 6 a.m., we we left to Mount Victoria. The plan was to stop on a few places for birdwatching on our drive. Our first stop was near Kazunma. Main target here was Long-billed Pipit. We did not find one. According to Ko Thet it is a good place for them. We did see a few Burmese Bushlarks and Richard’s Pipits. A little bit further, we stopped on two other places but also here birdwatching was rather slow. When we arrived near Nagabwat, the landscape turned from dry scrub into green forest. We noticed Collared Falconet and Lineated Barbet and four species of Parakeets with Alexandrine, Blossom-headed and Red-breasted and best of it, Gray-headed Parakeet. This last one was number 5000 on my life list.
In the afternoon, we passed by Saw and from there on, the road started climbing up to Kanpetlet. Not far behind this village, you find the “Pine Wood Villa”, our place to sleep for the next 5 nights. We arrived here at 17h30.
- January 5th 2013
We stayed the whole day at the higher parts of Mount Victoria. We drove up the mountain at dusk. A Gray Nightjar was sitting on the track and give good views. At a height of about 2700m we stopped. As soon as the first sunbeams appeared, the birds became active. Chinese Babax and Brown-capped Laughingthrushes were one of the first species we saw. Also around here were our first Gray Sibias and Fire-tailed Sunbirds. At probably the highest point of the track, a larger open place with a shelter, we saw our first and most fantastic endemic, a White-browed Nuthatch. When we were birdwatching further in good forest along the main track, we also saw Rusty-fronted and Streak-throated Barwings and Assam Laughingthrushes. Due to a landslide, it was not possible to continue by car, so we returned. In the afternoon, we observed other very good species like Black-browed Tit and Black-throated Parrotbills. In the evening, we saw our first Gray-sided Thrush. At sunset, we drove to a trail close near the Pine Wood Villa. This is a good place for Hodgson’s Frogmouth. We heard one calling for just two times but the bird did not approach.
- January 6th 2013
We spent our time again at higher altitude. We went further than we did the day before, behind the landslide where we returned on the fifth. A few kilometres behind the landslide, there also is good forest, but further on the habitat became more open. On our way up on the mountain, we saw two Gray Nightjars. We drove straight to the place with the shelter to search for Gold-billed Magpie. We were already a bit further when our driver saw them. We started taping and soon the Gold-billed Magpies reacted. In total, five birds were hopping around in the top of the trees. Two Himalayan Griffons were flying over. It was also a good day for pigeons. Ashy Wood-Pigeon, Thick-billed Pigeon and Mountain Imperial-Pigeon were all new on our list. Also new were Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker and Gould’s Sunbird. In the afternoon, while we were driving down again, we had a Spotted Forktail. It was only the third time that our guide saw this species on Mt. Victoria. We also noticed five Gray-sided Thrushes nearby. In the evening, we returned to the trail close to the Pine Wood Villa. One frogmouth was calling twice again but it did not react on tape.
- January 7th 2013
We started with the trail near the Pine Wood Villa. This place is on much lower altitude then the areas we were the previous days and we hoped to find other species here. The first bird we heard was a Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler. It called a few times but it stayed too far away all the time. Just at this place, a Chin Hills Wren-Babbler was hopping around in the dense vegetation just near the trail. We had good views of the bird, but it stayed all the time in the dark vegetation. Making a photograph was therefore not possible. There was a lot of bird activity along the trail. One of the bigger flocks holded many good species with Blue-winged Laughingthrush, Assam Laughingthrush and Red-faced Liocichla. Other birds around were two Striped Laughingthrushes, a Nepal Fulvetta and three Chestnut Buntings. A Spotted Wren-Babbler was singing in dense vegetation. It came very close from time to time; however, it was impossible to see it.
When we were back at the main track, it was already midday. At the start of the trail, a Gray-backed Shrike was hunting in the fields. We returned to the Pine Wood Villa for lunch. In the pines around the lodges, we saw a couple of Yellow-breasted Greenfinches. In the afternoon, we drove back to higher altitude. We did not go as far as we did the two previous days. First, we stopped at a small patch of pine trees. We found a couple of Black-bibbed Tits and a little bit further, a White-tailed Nuthatch. Best sighting for the rest of the day were +/- 30 Gray-sided Thrushes.
In the evening, we returned to the lower parts of the mountain. We tried for Hodgson’s Frogmouth above and below the Pine Wood Villa. We heard two birds but once again, they stayed far away. A Collared Scops-Owl was more cooperative. We had good views of it.
- January 8th 2013
In the morning, we tried for Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler at the same place as we heard one the day before. However, no sign of the bird this time. Most surprise here was a calling Blue-winged Pitta. We did not find any observation of this species in other trip reports. We did not stay for a long time on the lower altitudes of the mountain because we wanted to spend most of our time at the higher altitudes to search for Black-headed Shrike-Babbler and Himalayan Cutia. We tried for both species on a few stakeouts where Ko Thet saw them before. Despite searching and taping, we did not find any of the two. A dark, dense part of vegetation looked good to us for holding a Spotted Wren-Babbler. Soon after we played the tape, one was responding. It came closer and we got it into our binoculairs a few times, enough to see his spots and other details. Further, we saw Bonelli’s Eagle and Slender-billed Oriole, both new for the list. Also around where another 2 Black-bibbed Tits, a few Little Buntings and a Chestnut Bunting. Another attempt for the frogmouth resulted not even in a calling one.
- January 9th 2013
At 5 a.m., we were trying again for the frogmouth. Also now, we had to be satisfied with two calling birds in the distance. A Mountain and a Collared Scops-Owl were calling too. After breakfast in the Villa, we started birdwatching in the fields between the Pine Wood Villa and Kanpetlet. Now we found a very corresponsive pair of Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler who gave excellent views. On the same place, we added a Black-throated Prinia to our list. While walking down, we recorded two Striped Laughingthrushes and a day active Asian Barred Owlet was probably the last bird we saw before we passed Kanpetlet.
On our way to Bagan, we stopped a few times again. Our plan was to be in Bagan before sunset, because Ko Thet would show us a few places for Long-billed Pipit.
Near Nagabwat, we saw a flock of at least fifty Gray-headed Parakeets. New birds for our list were Himalayan Flameback and Large Woodshrike.
It was only late afternoon when we crossed the Irrawaddy River. We drove straight to the Saytana Paya Temple. We walked through the fields where we had been already during our first day in Bagan. According to Ko Thet, this is a good place for the pipit but we could not find one. We saw a Rain Quail and two Thick-billed Warblers here. Another good area is near the the Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples. This was another place where we tried before for the pipit. Here, we also had no luck. We had our fourth Hooded Treepie for the trip and a nice male Pied Harrier. We stayed at the New Wave Guesthouse again.
- January 10th 2013
This was our last day of birdwatching in Myanmar. Before noon, we tried for Long-billed Pipit on a few places near the Sulamani and Dhammayangyi Temples that Ko Thet showed us the day before. We walked around the temples for about three hours. We flushed a Chinese Francolin, added Eurasian Wryneck and a fantastic adult male Siberian Rubythroat to the list. A Booted Eagle was floating into the sky and another Hooded Treepie was seen, but we could not find a single Long-billed Pipit.
At noon, we walked back to the guesthouse. After lunch, we walked to the banks of the Irrawadday River behind the guesthouse, which took us less than ten minutes. We saw a few Sand Larks and White-tailed Stonechats again. The Greater Sand-Plover that was around a few days ago was still here. A Red-throated Pipit and a Citrine Wagtail were two of the last birds we observed before sunset.
- January 11th 2013
At 6h 15, we had a taxi to Bagan Airport in Nyanug U. Our flight to Yangon had a little delay. After a short flight, we arrived in Yangon around 10 o’clock. The flight to Bangkok was at 17h40, so we had to wait a long time again. We stayed at the restaurant opposite to the airport building. Arriving time in Bangkok was 19h30. By free shuttle bus, we drove to Suvarnabhumi Airport again.
- January 12th 2013
The flight to Abu Dhabi was at 2h30. We arrived there at 6h15. Connecting flight was at 9h00. We arrived in Brussels at 13h35.
